     GiS for business

What is GiS::: in my poor English I would say.. It is display of data beautifully in the form of map..it is the language of cartographer.

Now I will introduce you to data types in GiS:
1) attribute data ,which is for example in dBase file
2) map data which is in shape file(shp)

Types of map:  dot density map, thematic map, bivariate thematic map,

Projections:  Rbinson, Mercatur, Albers Conformal

Scale which I never try to understand during GiS course, but now after reading I got bit of it. It’s type of ai would say analogy. It is the ratio of distances of object represented on the map to the actual distances of those objects on the earth.

TIGER:  topologically integrated geographic encoding and referencing system

giS application in business:
Employee demographics
Strategic planning
Decision making

GiS for retail business:

Understand geography and study people’s relationship to location…

Take any basic map from census and add layers

GiS in retail business:
Integrate, view and analyze data.
Retail business constitute:  site selection, market analysis, distribution, delivery and management of facilities in relation to geography.

What is the beauty of GiS in light of retail business??

Companies are able to consider many possibilities
Companies can understand the potential,of investment in certain location,
Companies can analyze changing trends with GiS

Area of high demand
Area of high visual exposure

Any business to start, need to focus on three important factors..

1) operations: inside the wall of the business holding building.( customer service)
2) area surrounding
3) location: demographies, traffic counts, consumer demand, transport system etc

The new businessman comes with concept. In view of retails in mind, he thinks of chain. He might use quantitative methodology for concerned business.

Role of ArCGiS business analyst: he can help in comparing sites..

Correlation:  sales revenues as dependent variable.

Sometimes businessperson come with idea of opening the new site not far from existing site, example of cannibalization.

Gravity model??

Multiple regression analyst:
Of course , in business,  profit is dependent variable.
GiS can help in predicting the sales potential of prospective sites.

Time is the worst enemy of multiple regression model

ArcGIS  business analyst use community Tapestry to profile customers.

The term “choroplethe map” was introduced 1938 by the geographer John Wright in “Problems in Population Mapping”. (source, wikipedia). It is the communication between cartographer and audiences. It explains rates, densities and proportions, I think this is the point where GiS researchers and Epidemiologist have fun together 🙂

\Here right clicking on the layer, then properties ”general tab and ranming the layers help. One should be familiar with ‘insert’.

Already mentioned in previous post about attribute tables: we have to go to attributwe tables and then add field ..

New HIV cases per thousand population. New breast cancer cases per thousand population in the Queens.

Now i am really impressed with GiS software, how elegantly it gives histogram here…

How can we beautify map?  yes, give its color, give it new name…

How??

Go to the layer, and then to properties, symbology..quantities..bla bla bla.. you can see magic happening on the computer screen. You are giving new clothes to map…

Shift key , we know, used most often for caps lock.

click

“Since Shift is a modifier key, it can also be used in conjunction with the mouse.. For example, many programs will allow you to select more than one item by holding down the Shift key and clicking multiple items on the screen. It can also be used to select a section of text by clicking in one spot, holding Shift, then clicking in another spot. Finally, Shift is sometimes used for keyboard shortcutsthat perform common commands. For example, Control+S is the standard “Save” shortcut, while “Control+Shift+S” is typically used for “Save As…”

This word I got to know only last semester. My frind visited my home, and said,” Asif, please get rid of all these clutter on your table?” Yes, my table was really messed up, full of journal articles. not arranged in proper way.

The same word is here in GiS… there can be “clutter’ while working with GiS. We can get rid of it.

Where is Mauritania, does it do with Mauritus?? haha..

Mauritania is west African country…

Here is a question!!

Is attribute table the key for connecting to GiS to other software such as SPSS, SAS, Stata or SUDAN???

When we click right on the layer, we get attribute table in dropping menu.. and then we get the excel file, I mean required data for the concerned layer. Isn’t it fun???

Select by attributes remind me of SPSS, when we use less than or more than while recoding for new variables.

It is typical film dictionary word.  Like move on film… We can move the map and play around..haha the way the way to change the geography of word.. Playing with GiS is much better than playing on video game!!!

In GiS, it has “hand” like sign!

This word is very new to me, but it appears for the beginners. I didnt know its meaning, so I got it from freedictionary.com

‘any instruction that works first one way and then the other; it turns something on the first time it is used and then turns it off the next time’.

When we add one layer to the  all ready  existed map, itturns on itself on its own. We can make it appear or disappear.  Is it toggling?

Is toggling typical GiS word???

Try to toggle between data view and layout view!!

I am following  the last assignment of the GiS lab. It involves to find out the relationship between blood lead  level in children  and other variables like housing, road density, poverty and non-hispanic white population. I can imagine the relationship between  outcome of interest such as BLL and independent variables like housing and poverty. I am wondering and excited to know the correlation between BLL and other independent variables such as road density and non-Hispanic whites.

Of course, its not association; just correlation.

In short, this assignment is more epidemiology related. It has major component of statisitcs. I am new, but excited for analysis: I am eagerly looking forward this assignment with much interest and enthusiasm!!
